What is the proper name for an old art practice that uses paper material and stain to form statues?

I have a statue of an old jolly man that I thought was wood but it is made from some type of pressed paper and stained brown. I thought I saw this type of art on The Antique Road Show awhile ago but cant remember what it was called or anything about the artist, other then it was a woman. There is no signature or tag on the piece. thanks

I can only think of papier maché, which can either be done with mushed up paper, or else with strips.
